Special Programs at the Avalon
The Avalon Theatre supports its mission by exhibiting some of the most exciting year-round film programs in the Washington DC area. Our film series offer the newest in independent features, family films and world cinema, giving local filmgoers the chance to see stimulating films on the big screen all year long.
Wednesday Signature Series
Held only at the Avalon, the Wednesday Signature Series is a group of six rotating programs that showcase unique films from around the world. Screenings are held on Wednesday evenings at 8:00pm in our historic downstairs theater.
A monthly event where we present our current feature at a special discounted price for seniors. All films are screened with open captions.
A documentary series of films providing a cinematic immersion into the world’s best loved art, accompanied by insights from the world’s leading historians and arts critics, and in partnership with top international museums and galleries.
The best of British theatre comes to cinema screens around the world! With state-of-the-art filming techniques, plays are filmed live on stage giving cinema attendees the best seat in the house.
This series pairs screenings of films with lively presentations by notable experts from the world of science and technology. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in a manner that engages popular culture audiences.

Open to 6th-12th grade classes—and free for attendees—Cinema Classroom at the Avalon brings students from the metropolitan area together to view and discuss films with filmmakers and subject-matter experts in the Avalon’s historic, nonprofit theater. All films are screened with open captions.
