Wednesday Signature Series

Held only at the Avalon, the Wednesday Signature Series is a group of six rotating programs that showcase unique films from around the world. Screenings are held on Wednesday evenings at 8:00pm in our historic downstairs theater.

With more than 70 gold records, Dalida was the first singer to receive platinum and diamond discs with hits including “Bang Bang”, “Paroles Paroles”, and “Avec Le Temps”. DALIDA is the intimate portrait of a strong, fiercely independent, liberated, complex and talented woman.

Nominated for a record-tying 12 Israeli Academy Awards (and winner of 2), this visceral thriller follows a morally conflicted nightclub bouncer with frustrated dreams of becoming a father who finds himself entangled in the Israeli underworld. A tough but honorable man, Ovadia Rachmim works as a doorman at a Tel Aviv nightspot. Life at home with wife is strained by their efforts to conceive a child. Desperate to save his marriage, the cash-strapped Ovadia goes to work for a small-time mobster as a way to pay for his wife’s expensive fertility treatments.

Django Reinhardt was one of the most brilliant pioneers of European jazz and the father of Gypsy Swing. DJANGO grippingly portrays a chapter in the musician’s eventful life in this semi-fictional biopic set in German-occupied Paris in 1943. While many other Romani people are finding themselves the target of racist persecution and being murder, Django believes himself to be safe due to his popularity – until agents of the Nazi propaganda machine demand that he goes on tour to Germany.

A record-breaking smash in the Czech Republic, nominated for two Czech Lion Awards, ANGEL OF THE LORD 2 is the sequel to the popular Czech fairy tale about the angel Petronel who works at Heaven’s door, but is convinced that he deserves a better job. His eternal tempter, devil Uriah, provokes Petronel by saying, “Just pick an apple from the tree of knowledge and you will know what only God knows and the way to well-deserved recognition.” In the skirmish, the rare fruit rolls off to the Earth and the scatterbrained angel and his nemesis must go find the apple in the world of people.
