Art House Theater Day 2017
The Avalon is proud to be one of over 150 theaters nationwide participating in the second annual Art House Theater Day on September 24, 2017. Art House Theater Day recognizes the year-round contributions of film and filmmakers, patrons, projectionists, staff and the brick and mortar theaters that are passionately dedicated to providing access to the best cinematic experience.
In an age where media has become more digital than tangible, more solitary than social, art house theaters remain the physical spaces where film lovers congregate and connect with intrepid, creative filmmaking. This art house community has nurtured a flourishing ecosystem of adventurous audiences, independent productions, and an incredible diversity of original filmmaking. Art House Theater Day is a worldwide celebration in honor of this movement, a day to celebrate cinemas that stand the test of time and the tremendous film culture that art house theaters promote.
Please consider supporting the Avalon – DC’s only nonprofit film center – on this year’s Art House Theater Day. Your support of the Avalon funds programs for the entire community like the Wednesday Signature Series, which brings unique films from around the world to the Avalon for single night screenings, and Cinema Classroom at the Avalon, a free program for middle and high school students that has drawn over 4000 students from all eight DC wards. Your contributions also help maintain our beautifully restored theater building, the oldest continually operating cinema in Washington, DC.
