Screenwriter Ernest Lehman said that he wanted North by Northwest to be “the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures.” And with its spectacular action sequences – including the iconic crop duster scene – North by Northwest certainly delivers. Helped by top-notch work from frequent Hitchcock collaborators, including a star turn by Cary Grant, score by composer Bernard Herrmann, and title sequences designed by Saul Bass, this action-packed film is essential for Hitchcock fans.
New York City ad executive Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) finds himself pursued by ruthless spy Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) after Vandamm mistakes Thornhill for a CIA agent. Hunted relentlessly by Vandamm’s associates, the harried Thornhill ends up on a cross-country journey, looking for a way to survive and meeting the beautiful and mysterious Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint) along the way. 1959.
