HasNa Annual Film Screening presents MUSTANG (2015)

It’s the beginning of summer. In a village in northern Turkey, Lale and her four sisters return home from school, innocently playing with a group of boys. The supposed debauchery of their games causes a scandal with unforeseen consequences. The family home progressively transforms into a prison, as practical household chores replace schoolwork and marriages start to be arranged. The five sisters, driven by the same desire for freedom, twist the boundaries imposed upon them.

Through a celebration of authentic sisterhood and a rousing social commentary, this 2015 debut feature film by Deniz Gamze Ergüven presents an insightful depiction of five young women’s quest for a sense of agency and freedom.
