This black-and-white Western brings the cacophony of 19th century Eastern Europe strikingly to life. In pursuit of the slave Carfin, Costandin and his son encounter characters with varied backgrounds and beliefs. Each harbors prejudices passed down through generations. While Costandin comments on every situation with unflappable cheer, his son takes a more contemplative view of the world. A biting parable of late-feudal Europe with thematic arcs that stretch into the present, AFERIM! was Romania’s official submission to the Academy Awards.
