Cinema Classroom at the Avalon Essay Contest

The Avalon Theatre announces its inaugural essay contest for juniors and seniors enrolled in DC public and charter schools! Beginning on November 10, 2025, we will accept the first 20 entries for our featured film, Soundtrack for a Revolution. Students are invited to watch the film independently using the link provided here.
On November 10, 2025, interested and eligible juniors and seniors are invited to submit (1) an application and (2) a 500 – 750-word, double-spaced essay. The essay should be typed, proofread, and sponsored by a teacher from the student’s school. Applications should include the teacher’s work email address for sponsorship and enrollment verification. To ensure a broader range of diversity among participants and schools, we will accept only two students from any one DC public or charter in the first 20 eligible entries on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
Submissions will close on January 9, 2026, or when we have determined the first 20 eligible essays for review. Winners will be announced via email by January 16, 2026. and are expected to accept their award at the February 2nd viewing of Soundtrack for the Revolution at the Avalon Theatre.
ESSAY PROMPT

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

- Be enrolled as a junior or senior in a DC public or charter school.
- View the selected film via the link provided.
- Ask your DC public or charter school teacher to proofread your typed essay of 500–750 words (double-spaced), then submit the final PDF format and the teacher’s work email address on the application form.
- Submit the essay contest application with their name, school, grade, email contact, and contact number on the top right-hand side of the typed essay.
- Attend the Avalon’s February 2nd viewing of Soundtrack for a Revolution if awarded.

EVALUATION
Submissions will be evaluated according to the rubric linked here. Each essay will be read and scored by two judges from a panel of Avalon staff, professional writers, and educators.
All submitted essays must reflect original student work. We use digital tools to evaluate the authenticity of each entry. Any essay found to rely significantly on AI-generated content will be disqualified. Students are encouraged to write in their own voice and demonstrate independent thought throughout their submission.
ANNUAL AWARDS
A total of $2500 in cash prizes annually will be awarded to four winners at a ceremony to be held at the Avalon Theatre on February 2, 2026.
First Place: $1,000
Second Place: $750
Third Place: $500
Honorable Mention: $250
The Cinema Classroom Essay Contest is sponsored by the Avalon Theatre. Cinema Classroom offers curated films and educational experiences that focus on pressing human rights and social justice issues to DC students through yearlong programming. The program promotes film literacy by supporting teacher and student access to select documentaries that will engage students in critical issues through screenings and guided discussions.
